Golf: A day for Canterbury at age-group championships

Jordan Bakermans (Christchurch) has taken an almost unassailable lead going into the final round today, after following Wednesday's 68 with a 69 in the South Island under-19 championship on the Levels course, near Timaru.

His two-round total of 137 gives him a seven-shot buffer over Jordan Green (Ashburton).

Queenstown junior Dong Young Kim is in third place, after shooting a two-under-par 70 yesterday.

Jason Voo (Waitikiri) performed in a similar manner in the under-17 division yesterday, posting his second 71 to lead Samson Kim (Queenstown) by six shots after two rounds.

Inia Logan (Cromwell) lost his lead in the under-15 grade and with rounds of 80 and 82 lies in third place behind Jacob More (North Shore) on 159 and Vincent Guan (Russley) on 160.

Horiki Miya (Russley) holds a nine-stroke lead in the under-13 section and barring an upset, looks on target to win the golf medal.

It was an unhappy day for the Otago teams yesterday. The under-19 team fell further behind Canterbury which once again set the pace, led by Bakermans and Voo with sub-par rounds.

Otago's under-16 quintet not only surrendered a healthy first-round lead to Canterbury but now trails by four going into the final round.

The damage was done by Canterbury No 1 Connell Kilpatrick, who made two eagles on par-five holes on his way to scoring 71.

He was supported by Vincent Guan, with 76 and Adam Vining, on 78, while Samson Kim, with 74 was the only Otago golfer to break par.
