A relatively inexperienced Otago women's team faced a baptism of fire against two of New Zealand's heavyweights on the second day of women's interprovincial tournament on the Riverside Golf Club's Lochiel course in Hamilton yesterday.
Otago No 5 Robyn Chambers halved with Danielle Lowe in the morning with Otago going down 0.5-4.5 against Northland. Chambers made a good start but could not get in front and was square with Lowe after 15 holes.
Chambers made a good approach to the 17th green ensuring a par to win the hole and go 1 up.
But Lowe made a comfortable birdie on the 18th to get out with a half.
In the afternoon a star-studded Auckland team romped to a 5-0 win over Otago.
Sally Shaw at No 2 was square after six holes while Rachel Lissaman at No 4 held her opponent early turning one down.
Lissaman was tidy off the tee but eventually succumbed, losing her match on the 15th green.
Otago goes into the final two days of section play with one point after halving with southern neighbours Southland in the second round.
Otago will face Tasman this morning and will have a bye in the afternoon.
''The match against Tasman is a must-win for us this morning if we are to avoid winning the wooden spoon,'' Otago manager Lisa Joyce said.
