Inia Logan, of Cromwell High School, achieved a rare golfing feat scoring a nine-under-par 59 in the Otago intercollegiate final which was played over 18 holes on the Roxburgh course yesterday.

Logan (15) posted nine birdies and 11 pars in his near-faultless round going out in 29 and coming home in 30.

A large number of spectators were following his progress and along with Logan, were disappointed when he let a birdie chance slip away on the par 5 15th.

But Logan held his composure making the required birdie 3 on the following hole to ensure he broke the magical 60.

There have been a large number of low 60s scores at Roxburgh including a four under par 64 by Sungwoo Han (Wakatipu High School) yesterday.

But only Geoff Clarke has previously shot a 59 as a professional and the course has changed, giving Logan the course record.

However his scintillating round was not enough to help Cromwell win and Wakatipu took the title by six shots.

Queenstown golfers Han, Terry Kim, Jack Turner and Josh Bailey will now go forward to the national final in Taupo in October.

Turner, the son of professional Greg, did his bit to get Wakatipu home posting a par round of 68.

Otago Boys High School was third and Kings High School fourth in what was expected to be a close tussle.

Logan and Turner are both under 16 and will join Abigael Crawford (Columba College) to compete in the Eagles national final in Levin in late September.

Crawford provided another highlight of the day when she holed in one with a 5 iron on the 126-metre par 3 13th hole.

This was Crawford's second ace, his first scored in South Otago soon after taking up the game as a 13-year old.
