Golf: McRae in league of her own

Liz McRae was a runaway winner in the Wanaka women's championship which was played over 36 holes on the Wanaka course yesterday.

McRae (Wanaka) has been a regular member of the Otago women's team during the last two decades and has become a selector of Otago teams in recent years.

With scores of 75 and 74 on her home course she finished 16 shots ahead of Helen Hames (Waimate).

With the Toro women's interprovincial to be held at St Clair in Dunedin in December, McRae's form comes at an appropriate time.

The event attracted a large field, with players not only from Central Otago but from Canterbury, Dunedin and Southland.

McRae finished well ahead of several former Otago representatives including Suzanne Ewing (Wanaka), Dale Dagg (Arrowtown) and Margaret-Mary Coughlan (Christchurch).

The men's championship, which is a crucial trial for Otago team selection, will be played over 36 holes on Saturday.
