The St Clair men's pennant team won the final of the provincial Senior A series by beating Queenstown 4 games to 2 in fine conditions at Balmacewen yesterday afternoon.

St Clair was determined to win the final to avenge the loss the team suffered to a young Queenstown sextet in Cromwell in last year's final.

The Dunedin team's tail wagged, with Andrew Hobbs and Greg Johnson posting 6 and 4 wins and when St Clair No1 Brent McEwan beat Mark Brooks 4 and 3, the match was effectively over.

A 3-3 draw would have guaranteed a St Clair win on a countback of holes but St Clair No4 Tony Giles made sure of the win when he chipped in from the back apron of the 18th green for a par 4 to beat Dong Young Kim one up.

For Queenstown, Chadol Han (No2) and Kayne Wardell (No3) posted wins at the expense of Stephen Hitchcox and Chris Snow respectively.

In the morning, both finalists romped home, winning their matches 6-0. Queenstown accounted for North Otago, while St Clair downed Balclutha in style.

The lower grades were played with the assistance of handicaps and the titles were evenly spread throughout the province.

Otago finished 3-3 with Arrowtown in the Senior B event but took the title on a countback of holes by an 11 to 9 margin.

Gladfield won the intermediate title from Ardleigh, while the small Allan Grange club won all six games over Arrowtown in the Junior A final.

Twelve Oaks accounted for Ardleigh in the Junior B event and Port Chalmers won all six games to take the Presidents Cup.
