Otago finds finishing off difficult

Auckland, Canterbury and Waikato are on target to make the playoffs in the Toro women's interprovincial tournament which continues on the Sherwood Park course in Whangarei this morning.

All three teams have three points after four rounds and lie within a game countback of each other, while the local Northland team also has three points but a a much smaller game tally.

Meanwhile, Otago has one point and 6½ games after the four rounds after losing to Bay of Plenty and Canterbury yesterday.

The young Otago team has one win, having beaten Southland on Monday afternoon, but has been competitive in its other three outings.

Otago featured well on the front nine against Hawke's Bay on Monday and the strong Bay of Plenty and Canterbury quintets yesterday but faded on the homeward nine in each contest.

Against the Bay yesterday morning, No2 Annabel Evans beat Jodae Ngaheu by 3 and 2, while Abigail Crawford halved her match.

At the halfway stage Otago held a narrow lead, with Evans and Crawford leading while Danielle Bailey and Sumin Kang were all square.

But finishing off is crucial at this level and the young team is yet to learn this crucial skill.

In the afternoon it was a repeat of this formula, with Otago turning narrowly ahead of the favoured Canterbury team.

But Canterbury rallied on the back nine, leaving slim pickings for Otago, and Crawford notched a single half.

Otago has a bye this morning and will face Tasman this afternoon, which should increase the team's points and game tally.
