Otago to play off for ninth and 10th at interprovincials

Otago will play off for ninth and 10th at the women’s interprovincial championships after squaring its match yesterday.

Otago drew with home team Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay 2½-2½ as matches went down to the wire at the Maraenui Golf Club in Napier.

Otago No 1 Sumin Kang won one-up over Tessa McDonald, while No 2 Danielle Bailey finished all square with Jamie Field.

Tracey Storer, at No 3, lost one-up to Claire Choi, while Susan Greig won 4 and 3 over Martha Manaena. Amy Johns lost 6 and 5 to Fiona Ellis.

Kang was three behind after the first nine holes but fought back to be one ahead going into the last hole, which she managed to halve.

Bailey was down for most of the match but managed to claw her way back and won the final hole to halve the match.

Storer came back from three down to get close against Choi but ran out of holes. Greig got up early, three up after four holes, and maintained the lead, finishing on the 15th.

Johns started well but had trouble off the tee and slipped out of the running.

Otago will take on Northland today in the playoff for ninth and 10th.

In the semifinals, Manawatu/Whanganui plays Bay of Plenty, while North Harbour faces Auckland.
