MacLachlan was the standout of the Otago players in Queenstown the week before but lost any chance of winning with an 8-over 78 in the morning round.

At lunch, he held a two-shot lead over Snow with Wardell a further shot back while Hancock finished on 2-over 72.
Jonny MacKay (Lower Waitaki) and Hodgson kept in touch with 73 each while, barring an upset, the remaining senior players looked out of contention.
In the afternoon, Snow was the epitome of consistency birdieing the par-5 10th for a sub-par homeward nine after turning 2-over with bogeys on the first and ninth holes.
Sam Smythe (Dunstan) finished in a tie for 14th but has every reason to fondly remember this year’s tournament.
He hit a five iron on the 170m par-3 13th for his maiden hole-in-one.
The top players will now compete over 72 holes in the North Otago event this weekend, the last opportunity to impress.
Selection convener Jason Hughes will then name the 10 players to compete in the triangular tournament against Aorangi and Southland, at Chisholm Park on October 1-2.
