By experiencing three holes in one on the same day, the Alexandra Golf Club  had a phenomenon on Saturday  usually seen only at  mini golf.

Mike Fraser, of Alexandra, Dave Ward, of Balclutha and Fred  Panting, of Earnscleugh, all achieved the rare feat on par 3s.

Two of the shots were produced on the second hole and the other at the 12th. Club captain Brian Bruce verified the achievement, saying it was "pretty unusual".

"It was a first time for all of them.  Yeah, they’re pretty rare.  Lydia Ko only got her first one the other day and she’s played a few rounds."

There were about 80 people at the club on Saturday and there was "a bit of a celebration in the afternoon."

The club had once seen five holes in one in a week, and perhaps two in one day, he said.

Mr Fraser, one of the successful golfers,  said the occurrence was "really quirky".

"As we teed off we heard screaming and cheering from another part of the course,  which we later found out was a hole in one."

He soon accomplished the same and when he got back to the clubhouse discovered a third man had done it.

"It was pretty special. Having the others get it, too, almost makes it more memorable."

Mr Panting said it was "a bit surreal".

"Every golfer dreams about getting a hole in one. Having three in one day just proves there were some reasonable golfers there on the day."

It was not an easy course, he said.

"It was a medal day,  which means all the men play from the blue tees, which usually lengthens the course by about 600m."

Mr Ward could not be reached yesterday.
