The former international rider from Queenstown returned to racing this season after taking time off when his 2009 European campaign ended and a knee injury in December 2010 terminated his national offensive last year.
"It was good to be away for nearly two years and come back and win," Columb said of his results in the final round of three at Taupo on Saturday.
Columb (28) didn't win the day - that honour instead going to fellow Suzuki star Rhys Carter, of Mount Maunganui - but his 3-1-2 results gave him a huge 18-point margin over visiting Australian Geran Stapleton, while Carter had to settle for third overall.
Cody Cooper, of Mount Maunganui, added MX1 supercross championship-winning glory to the MX1 motocross title he collected last year.
Columb's gain has not come without a physical cost and he admitted to "hobbling around a bit at the moment" yesterday.
The knee that was operated on earlier this year is still producing pain through the kneecap and the broken anterior cruciate ligament, in his other knee, the result of a skiing accident when he was 10, has also been giving him grief.
He put it down to "general wear in tear" sustained over years competing in one of the toughest sports on joints.
Columb has no time to rest and is straight into motocross training for the the International Motocross Woodville 2012 New Zealand Grand Prix at the end of January, before the motocross nationals begin in South Canterbury on February 12.
While motocross courses had bigger jumps than supercross, the courses tended to be more rolling and were endurance tests at 20 minutes each, rather than the shorter, but more intense, supercross races.
