What matters is that the Diamonds have taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-test series.
With less than a minute remaining, the Silver Ferns were on attack, looking for the goal that might have sent the game into overtime.
Centre Laura Langman threw a pass to Maria Tutaia but a yellow blur swept through and knocked the ball away.
The Australians regained possession and passed the ball among themselves to run the clock down.
Neither the coach nor the print media saw who deflected the ball, though the smart money was on goal defender Julie Corletto.
"I can't tell you because every time the umpire came down she stood right in my view," Plummer said.
"I had to keep standing up to see the game so I missed the touch on the ball. But, to be honest with you, who cares."
Australia played some superb netball in the first three quarters and led 39-34 going into the final 15 minutes.
The Silver Ferns charged back into contention with five unanswered goals to level the score.
Just when it looked as though the home side had the momentum, Australia fought back and found a way to hold on despite some uncharacteristic mistakes.
"We got a little bogged down in the last quarter and made a couple, I'd call them, junior errors," Plummer said.
"But I thought the defence really went up probably another two notches to really make sure they got that turnover."
Perhaps it was the pink ball, or maybe Irene van Dyk's confidence really has waned, but she missed a sitter from under the hoop early.
It did not help having the 1.96m-tall Susan Fuhrmann leaning on her, but the sight of van Dyk missing from underneath still takes some getting used to.
She finished with 27 goals from 30 attempts, though, and it was a much-improved effort after the disappointing display a week earlier in Brisbane.
Both sides missed just two goals in the opening quarter but Australia scored the last three goals to take a 14-10 lead into the first break.
The Silver Ferns started the second period brightly and posted five unanswered goals to level the score.
The crowd made its feelings known when Corletto pointed to a bandage on her right thigh and called a time-out.
The break arrested the home side's roll and Australia restored its lead.
Trailing by three goals, the Silver Ferns started the second half well, piling on five quick goals to draw level.
But they faded, allowing Australia to score the last four goals.
Australian shooter Susan Pratley scored with 34 of her 37 attempts.
Sharelle McMahon was busy at goal attack and Laura von Bertouch was electric in the midcourt.
