Netball: 'Best game' required from Steel

Going into a season-defining match, the last thing the Steel camp can afford is to be star-struck.

But when you look at the opposition line-up it would be easy to be distracted. With the likes of Laura and Natalie von Bertouch, Geva Mentor and Mo'onia Gerrard gracing the playing roster, the Adelaide Thunderbirds have no obvious weaknesses.

Then there is their record this season. The Thunderbirds are on a six-game winning streak which started in round six with a 51-40 win over the New South Wales Swifts in Sydney.

The Thunderbirds are comfortably through to the play-offs, with nine wins from 11 games. The two losses came against the Melbourne Vixens, whom many are picking to win the ANZ Championships.

The Steel is just outside the top four with six wins from 11 matches and, realistically, needs to win at the Edgar Centre on Monday night to keep its semifinal prospects alive.

But enough on the opposition. The Steel has a decent squad itself and coach Robyn Broughton is confident her side matches up well.

"They've got huge depth and should be performing the way they are," Broughton said.

"But they still have had times when they have struggled through games. We just have to come out with our best game."

The Thunderbirds needed extra time to beat the Canterbury Tactix the last time they were in New Zealand but Broughton believes too much is made of the travel factor.

"I don't think it is the travel. I think it is the interpretation of the rules. There are very competent umpires on both sides [of the Tasman] but we actually play the game differently. Unless you can adapt, there is an issue."

But with more exposure to different styles of netball, Broughton believes the umpiring will become less of a factor.

The Steel's task has not been made any easier with Silver Ferns defender Sheryl Scanlan ruled out with a calf injury.

"She will miss the Thunderbirds game by the look of it but will be all right for the next one."

Scanlan and Katrina Grant had been building a useful combination at the back, picking up some good ball on defence. With Scanlan unavailable, Megan Hutton will likely start at goal keep.

Broughton was pleased with the intensity her side showed in its 52-50 loss to the Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane on Monday, and, in particular, with Megan Dehn's return.

The Australian replaced Daneka Wipiiti in the squad and quickly found her rhythm.

"I thought she was outstanding. Don't get me wrong, you miss a player like Daneka because you have to change your style. But Megan came in and is a very experienced and heady player."

The teams have met just once, with the Thunderbirds winning 54-41 in Adelaide last year.

• Steel shooter Megan Dehn and former Otago Rebel Demelza McCloud have been named in an 11-strong world team to play the Silver Ferns in a three-test series in New Zealand in August.

• The world seven team is: Simone Forbes (Jamaica), Louisa Brownfield (England), Peta Scholz (Australia), Frances Solia (Samoa), Geva Mentor (England), Sonia Mkoloma (England), Althea Byfield (Jamaica), Natasha Chokljat (Australia), Delmeza McCloud (Australia), Tamsin Greenway (England), Megan Dehn (Australia).
