Netball: Busy McCloud right at home

Otago defender Demelza McCloud is used to juggling a few balls.

But lately, the 32-year-old has really outdone herself.

In the last couple of months, the former Australian international has bought a house (a lovely brick home in St Kilda), gone on a trip of a lifetime to the United States, made her provincial debut for Otago two days after arriving back in the country, moved into her new abode and discovered Kabbalah.

That last bit might not strictly be true, but it has certainly been a busy period in her life.

The stresses of buying a home and moving house can be enough to tip people over the edge, but not McCloud - she takes it all in her rather long stride.

"It has all been so much fun. Settlement takes forever but luckily, I was distracted by an overseas holiday," McCloud said.

"Now that I'm here, I just keep running around the house and thinking, 'Oh my God, this is really my place'."

While her decision to buy her house was "spontaneous", it was also quite calculated.

"The plan is to have a little bit of consistency and feel settled. And I felt it was just a really great time to make a commitment to the area and, hopefully, I can play out the rest of my time here."

McCloud, who was born in Victoria but calls Adelaide home, played for the Steel this season but it is unclear whether the franchise will re-sign her for next season.

The import slot is often the last piece of the puzzle to be worked out.

"I can't wait to have some clarity on what is going on next year and where the team is sitting for the Steel. But, at the moment, I'm really looking forward to hopefully getting that title for Otago.

"I hope I did enough for the Steel to value me and to want to keep me around. I felt like I did, so I can't control much more than that."

McCloud spent August in the United States. She had a wedding to attend and spent the remainder of the trip having an "absolute blast" travelling around.

She arrived back in Dunedin last Thursday and on Saturday made her Otago debut.

Otago led Waikato by nine goals at one stage but the visiting side rallied and the game was drawn 56-56.

The team endured a disrupted build-up, with McCloud overseas and four other players in Australia on duty with the New Zealand under-21 team.

There are no excuses this week, though. The team has had a solid week of training and should be much-better prepared for its crucial round two away clash against Auckland-Waitakere tomorrow.

"We just want to build on what we did well in the weekend," McCloud said.

"We took a nine-goal lead but just threw it away. So we know we have the connections. We've just got to keep it going."

Auckland Waitakere had a 46-44 win against Wellington in Porirua in the opening round and has a strong side including Mystics defenders Rachel Rasmussen and Charlotte Kight, shooter Grace Rasmussen, midcourter Portia Woodman, and Tactix defender Finau Pulu.

The attack end looks inexperienced, though, and McCloud and defensive partner Storm Purvis will look to assert some pressure.

Purvis has the inside information, having played alongside many of the Auckland women.
