Netball: Hutton ready for crunch match

Fresh from a long season in the UK Superleague, Steel defender Megan Hutton reckons she has plenty left in the gas tank for her side's crunch match against the Northern Mystics at Stadium Southland in Invercargill on Monday.

The underrated goal keep has been on the go since joining Northumbria in October. Her side was knocked out of the play-offs on March 31 and she rushed back to link up with the Steel for its ANZ Championship opener against the NSW Swifts in Sydney on April 7.

The defensive mainstay has been in solid form for the Steel and helped her side shut down the Canterbury Tactix shooters during the team's best performance this season.

But her abrasive style also caught the attention of the umpires, who sent the 1.87m tall player to the sideline after constant infringing.

It was a baffling moment for Hutton. She had been using every trick in the book to upset the shooters but was surprised to be asked to step off the court until after the next goal was scored.

"I was actually quite shocked as to why I was sent off,'' Hutton said.

"Usually, in situations like that, you are just asked to stand away while the shot is being taken, not taken off the court.''

The official line is she was binned for persistent obstruction and Hutton has promised it will not happen again. But that does not mean she will be backing off against the Mystics, a side which has yet to post a win.

"They will be desperate,'' Hutton said.

"They've got a really good team. I'm quite mystified as to why they haven't been able to come out on top following a couple of their performances, because they have been up there.

"We're not going to let their next performance be the one they come out on top of. We've really got a lot to prove out there, as well.''

The Steel has been a mixed bag so far. The side showed some promise in its opening game and hit its straps against the Tactix in Christchurch in round three.

But a below-par performance against the Central Pulse, and an error-ridden display against the Adelaide Thunderbirds last weekend, must leave the fans wondering which Steel side will front up on Monday.

Hutton admits the Steel has been the architect of its own demise with a high turnover rate. But it is still early days in terms of the competition and there is plenty of time to bounce back.

"We've got to look at the big picture. The Australian sides have been fantastic and it is a great opportunity for us to play teams from Australia.

"We're having a few problems. Our turnover rate is quite high but they are things that just need tweaking. It is a tough competition and for it to work well for us we need to start well and just limit our errors.''

The other factor is that the Steel has played its four games on the road and is looking forward to playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season.

"We've had a hard trot with four away games, and two of those in Australia. But it is good knowing we've got a couple of weeks at home now. As we all know, nothing beats a Southland crowd.''
