Netball: Inclusion of Wells 'awkward'

Former Silver Ferns captain Belinda Colling feels the inclusion of Australian-born shooter Ameliaranne Wells in the Silver Ferns squad is ''a little bit awkward''.

The 23-year-old Queenslander only came to the selectors' attention in mid-August when she signed with the Central Pulse.

The former Firebirds back-up shooter is eligible to represent New Zealand through her father, and before she knows her thongs from her jandals, she could be suiting up for her adopted nation against her home country in next month's Constellation Cup.

It is a rapid transition that has been accelerated by Maria Tutaia's absence. Tutaia has been ruled out for the season with a foot complaint.

It is also a huge step up for Wells. The 1.86m goal attack was rarely sighted for the Firebirds this season; Amy Wild was preferred.

Colling has mixed feelings about Wells' change of allegiance.

''I don't know much about her as a player. I've seen very little of her during the ANZ but she is physically a great specimen.

''She has good height and good accuracy. But it is a little bit controversial and I'm not too sure how I feel about it.

''We have to get away from the view being a New Zealander these days means your family has to have lived here for 100 years. We have to accept being a New Zealander can mean lots of different things.

''What you would hope is that you are representing a country that you have a passion and loyalty to. It is not just a franchise or club team you are playing for because it is something very special.

''I guess the thing with her is she has not played any netball in New Zealand at all. It does feel a little bit awkward ... and I'm sure the Aussies are having snide remarks about it. But at the end of the day she is eligible.''

Colling hopes Wells' inclusion will inspire national development squad shooters Te Paea Selby-Rickit and Malia Paseka to lift their effort.

''You can grumble and moan about it or you can get on and make yourself better.''

Mystics defender Temalisi Fakahokotau is the only other uncapped player included in the 12. She replaces a pregnant Anna Harrison.

Back-up shooter Bailey Mes and midcourter Grace Rasmussen have been recalled at the expense of Ellen Halpenny and Steel midcourter Shannon Francois.

Colling felt Francois had perhaps done enough to retain her spot.

''It is disappointing for Shannon. I don't think she has done anything wrong. When she came on during the Commonwealth Games she performed well. But she is only young and has plenty more time.''

The first Constellation Cup game is in Invercargill on October 2.
