The ANZ Championship resumes this weekend. Hayden Meikle identifies five rookies to watch.

1. Shannon Francois (Steel)
The University of Otago pharmacy student was a star for the New Zealand under-21 team last year. Will add sparkle to a Steel midcourt missing the guiding hand of Wendy Frew.

2. Louise Thayer (Steel)
Another young gun for the rebuilding Southern side. Thayer has made a big impact in an Otago bib and now gets to show her ability in the defensive circle at the top level.

3. Jo Harten (Tactix)
The towering shooter makes her debut down under after playing 35 tests for England. Won bronze at the 2011 world championships and then helped England win the FastNet series.

4. Khao Watts (Magic)
Watts - her first name is pronounced Kay-O - is a South Australian who can play all three positions in the midcourt.

5. Verity Simmons (Fever)
The 20-year-old midcourter has battled through a major shoulder operation and being diagnosed with diabetes to earn her first professional contract.
