Netball: Southern side must find some Steel

Steel shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid probably cannot wait for the first centre pass tonight.

Who can blame her? In two matches against the Tactix, the Jamaican international has scored 130 goals - that's right, 130.

She scored 65 in the Steel's 75-56 win in round two last season, and 65 in the 79-63 win in Dunedin in June last year.

The towering goal shoot will not be the only member of the Steel squad eagerly anticipating the game.

The pressure is beginning to mount on the franchise. The Steel targeted a spot in the top four this year. But after just two wins from seven matches, that goal, in all likelihood, slipped away with the 62-54 loss to the Pulse in Invercargill.

There is still a mathematical chance, and the relief a potential win against the Tactix in Christchurch offers will help preserve what hope remains.

Steel coach Janine Southby could not be reached for comment. But if the Steel (ninth) is going to avoid sweeping changes during the off-season, it needs to claw its way up the competition table.

The Steel has been able to score freely but its defensive unit has struggled to generate enough turnover ball to help win more games.

The Tactix, however, has struggled at both ends. Defensively, the Christchurch-based team is the weakest in the league and has been weakened further by the loss of Jessica Moulds. She ruptured her Achilles tendon during the loss to the Mystics.

Management has decided against bringing in a replacement player and Jane Watson is likely to partner Zoe Walker in the defensive circle.

The paring will need to work overtime to restrict Fowler-Reid, who is the leading scorer in 2014 with 286 goals at an average of 40.9 per match. She has scored 82% of the Steel's goal this season, so stopping her supply of ball will clearly be part of the Tactix game plan.

Steel goal attack and captain Jodi Brown has been trying to put up more shots this season and when she does, the Steelis hard to stop.

It is unclear which combination of defenders will start for the Steel. Erena Mikaere and Rachel Rasmussen started the last game but Phoenix Karaka has been the most effective and Storm Purvis is also battling for court time.

Tactix shooter Mwai Kumwenda is not overly tall at 1.83m, so perhaps Karaka will start ahead of Mikaere at goal keep, with Rasmussen at goal defence.

The midcourt is settled and Shannon Francois, Phillipa Finch and Wendy Frew are likely to start, if fit. Back-up wing defence Stacey Peeters has been impressive when she has had opportunities.

Historically, the Steel has dominated the fixture, winning nine of the 12 games and four of the last five. It has also enjoyed superiority in Christchurch, winning five out of six games.

The Melbourne Vixens dispatched the defending champion the Adelaide Thunderbirds 64-26 in Melbourne on Saturday. That is not a mistake - the Thunderbirds really did managed just 26 goals.

Yesterday the Queensland Firebirds beat the New South Wales Swifts 55-40 and the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic beat the Northern Mystics 56-50.
