Netball: Third-quarter surge key for Southern A

A devastating spurt by Southern A in the third quarter accounted for a plucky Phys Ed B in the Dunedin premier competition on Saturday.

Phys Ed B matched up well in the first half and trailed 20-15 at the break.

Any suggestion of a boilover, though, was quickly silenced with Southern outscoring its opponent 16-4 in the crucial third period to effectively end the match as meaningful contest.

The game went through the motions in the final period with Southern winning the quarter 12-7, and the game 48-26.

Otago shooters Rihi Salter and Greir Campbell combined well with some superb passing.

Campbell landed 33 of her 42 attempts and Salter scored 15 from 21.

Defenders Emma Moynihan and Lorie McDonald dominated at the other end, swooping on loose ball and picking off intercepts.

Moynihan also fired in some bullet passes in an impressive performance.

Midcourter Hayley Saunders also snaffled plenty of possession and her speed around the court caused Phys Ed B endless headaches.

For Phys Ed B, Ashleigh Hutton scored 16 from 23 and Nicole Bourke 10 from 18.

In other matches, University-Albion was too strong for Southern B, winning 61-38, and Phys Ed A dispatched College 52-32.
