Refreshed Steel side ready for improving Northern Mystics

A timely break has the Southern Steel refreshed and ready to go.

It plays the Northern Mystics in Auckland tonight, nine days after its last outing.

That was a thrilling affair, the Steel sneaking home 53-52 against the Mainland Tactix in Christchurch.

It followed another close win a day earlier against the Northern Stars.

However, it was a weekend which took its toll.

Courtney Elliott missed the Tactix game after sustaining an ankle injury, while Jennifer O'Connell battled through after a bang on the thigh left her in pain.

O'Connell returned and, aside from a bruise, has recovered.

Elliott has travelled and is likely to be available, although the number of minutes she will play are uncertain.

As well as giving that duo time to recover, the break allowed the remainder of the team a chance to recharge after its second double-header of the season.

''To be fair, it's been quite tough having those back-to-back games and the last one we've had a few injuries and a few niggles,'' coach Reinga Bloxham said.

''So it's quite nice to have a wee break and regroup and freshen up a bit. It couldn't have come at a better time for us and we're happy that the back-to-backs are all done for us.''

Halfway through the ANZ Premiership season, the team has six wins from eight games.

Bloxham felt the side still had room for improvement, and was looking for consistency in taking a lead and pushing on from it.

The majority of its wins had been close ones, although the ability to get those results had pleased Bloxham.

''Probably the thing I've been most proud of has been how we've been able to hang in there for most [of] the games and come away with a couple of wins in the dying minutes, of the last few games anyway.

''So it shows we've got that composure when we need it.

''Our next step is to make sure we can take that intensity and intent and purpose into the whole game, I think that will be our biggest thing moving forward.''

Bloxham is expecting a tough match against an improving Mystics side that handed the Pulse its first loss of the season in their last match.

They would have Maria Folau available this time as well.

That would add another weapon to the Mystics this time around, as the shooter had been unavailable in the first two games between the sides this year - both won by the Steel.

Aside from Elliott's ankle, there were no other injury concerns for the Steel.

Captain Wendy Frew has had all restrictions lifted after her achilles injury and is available for the full game.

Kate Heffernan has joined the side on a permanent basis to replace Dani Gray, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.
