Squad depth, adaptability key for Steel

Reinga Bloxham is ready for a different season this year.

Even so, the Southern Steel coach knows there is only so much her team can do to prepare.

The Steel begins its ANZ Premiership campaign in Christchurch against the Mainland Tactix on Sunday.

Bloxham said there was plenty of excitement in the team, which had so far avoided Covid-19.

It is looking on track to take a full strength line-up into the season opener.

The players have been limiting their interactions over the past three weeks, while following strict health protocols around washing hands and wearing masks.

Despite that, Bloxham knew squad depth and being adaptable would be key as the season progressed.

"Everyone’s got plan A and plan B and all these sort of things in place," she said.

"It’s something that’s happening so quickly and changing so quickly, day to day and week to week. It’s something you’ve got to go with what’s presented in front of you.

"The good thing for us is we know this week we’ve got a team that’s healthy and ready to compete, so we’ll go with that. Then we have to wait until next week to see where we are at."

Bloxham said the team was excited to build towards its potential.

Indeed, there is much more expectation surrounding the Steel than last year.

It has held on to the majority of the squad that defied predictions and made the playoffs last season.

While it was rarely scintillating, it made a habit of playing gritty netball and grafting its way to close win after close win.

England shooter George Fisher was often the star among that effort, and her return is notable.

Captain Shannon Saunders and Kate Heffernan are also back to bring tenacity to the midcourt.

Shooters Georgia Heffernan and Saviour Tui, as well as defender Kate Burley, join the squad, while Tiana Metuarau and Taneisha Fifita were the two notable departures.

If the team could connect and find consistency early, Bloxham felt it could be dangerous in what she expected to be a tight competition.

"I think with the group of players we’ve got, there’s definitely the opportunity to build into a team that can be quite formidable.

"I think the biggest thing around that is searching for consistency in what they’re doing. They’re quite young in age a lot of them, and we’ve got a few players in there that haven’t had a lot of consistent court time.

"So there’s a lot of learning to be done in the season and its hard when you haven’t played week in, week out what that’s going to feel like and how you’re going to respond to it.

"But I think if we can find that consistency early, that’s going to help us going forward."
