It has been a horror day for New Zealand at the Rio Olympics, with several medal hopes being upset.

The men's sevens team was stunned by Japan 14-12 in their opening game, losing ace Sonny Bill Williams in the process. They bounced back to beat Kenya 28-5, keeping their medal hopes alive, although require a win over Great Britain tomorrow to have a chance to progressing to the quarterfinals.

Both double sculls rowing teams failed to make their finals. Reigning world champions Zoe Macfarlane and Nicole Stevenson narrowly came fourth in their semifinal, while Robbie Manson and Chris Harris could not haul in Great Britain.

In more positive news, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray cruised into the final of the men's pair, while Mahe Drysdale and Emma Twigg both made their single sculls semifinals.

The equestrian brought more disappointment, as Mark Todd knocked off four rails in the show jumping to see New Zealand plummet from first to fourth in the team event.

Michael Phelps brought his gold medal tally to 21, winning the 200m butterly and 4x200m relay with the USA.

Meanwhile tennis favourite Serena Williams was knocked out of the singles by Elina Svitolina.
