Day two of the Rio Olympics has seen New Zealand win its first medal of the 2016 Games, with Natalie Rooney winning a silver medal in the women's trapshooting.

Another medal hope, swimmer Lauren Boyle, failed to advance to the final of the 400m freestyle, finishing fifth in her heat and 14th overall.

Meanwhile the New Zealand sevens women won a tense quarterfinal 5-0 over the USA, having to defend inside their own 22 while being a player down late in the game.

The Black Sticks women got off to a strong start, beating South Korea 4-1, while the men drew their second match of the Games 2-2 with Great Britain.

Mike Dawson advanced to the semifinals of the canoe slalom, while the New Zealand equestrian team took a hit, coming in sixth after the dressage.

As at 2pm on Monday afternoon (NZT) China leads the medal table with three golds and eight medals overall. They are followed by Australia, also on three golds.

Traditional powers the USA are placed sixth, with eight medals but just one gold, while Russia are one place below with five medals including one gold.

New Zealand's silver medal has them tied for 19th.
