Academy announces new intake

A new group of Otago's future sporting stars were announced yesterday.

The Otago Academy of Sport announced its 2019 intake for its Otago and Central Otago talent development programmes.

Fifteen sports were represented across the 24-strong group to participate in the two-year programme.

The academy aims to provide athletes skills in various areas of athletic life.

That includes things such as strength and conditioning, mental skills and nutrition.

Entrants are accepted on the grounds of showing potential to achieve on the national and international stages.

A North Otago development programme is also set to be held later in the year.

The academy has produced plenty of talent since its inception.

Graduates have included Winter Olympic medallists Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous, and Paralympic medallists Anna Grimaldi, Holly Robinson, Rory McSweeney and Jess Hamill.

Others have included rowers Ruby Tew and Zoe McBride and Black Stick Kane Russell.
