Boccia: Dijkstra in search of funds

Experienced boccia international Henk Dijkstra is targeting next year's world championships in Lisbon, but needs funding help to get there.

Dijkstra (48) is part of the four-man New Zealand team that needs to raise $13,000 to get to Portugal next May.

The world championships over the next two years are qualifying events for the London Paralympics in 2012.

Dijkstra first competed in a world championships in Sydney in 1995 and is now an experienced international and one of the world's elite.

But he does not find it any easier when competing internationally.

"It's getting harder. The standard keeps lifting," Dijkstra said yesterday.

"Other countries are getting better and better."

Boccia used to be an art but it is being turned into a science with the improved technology.

"Other countries are making their own set of boccia balls and improving their ramps," Dijkstra said.

"We can't afford to do that."

Dijkstra was born with cerebral palsy, a disease that has left him with severe physical disabilities.

It restricts his physical options and makes travelling outside his home an ordeal.

He has overcome many obstacles to excel at boccia and wants to compete in the ramp event at his fourth Paralympics in London.

Dijkstra joined with Greg Jackson (Christchurch) and they finished fifth in the pairs at the Beijing Paralympics last year.

He also competed in the Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996 and was fourth in the pairs with Jackson in Athens in 2004.

He believes that the combination he has with Jackson could help him reach the podium in 2012.

Dijkstra competed in Hong Kong three months ago and finished ninth in the individual event and eighth in the pairs with Mandy Slade (Auckland).

At the New Zealand championships in Whangarei he won silver in the individual event behind Jackson and was third in the pairs.
