The coach of the New Zealand team Peter Becker confirmed this to the Otago Daily Times. A qualifying tournament will be held in Germany in December and the two top teams will fill the last two spots at the Olympic Games in Sochi.
''Yes. We have full intentions of sending a team to compete in Germany,'' Becker said.
''They now are playing in a tournament in Japan as part of their build-up.''
The selectors have kept the same team that finished fifth at the world championships last year.
The nations eligible to send men's teams to the inaugural World Curling Federation Olympic Qualification tournament are the United States, New Zealand, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Germany,Finland and Korea.
The new World Curling Federation Olympic qualifying event will be held in Fuessen, Germany, from December 11-15. New Zealand is ranked 10th and ''if the qualification process had been the same as in 2006, we would have already qualified,'' Becker said.
''It will be a tough tournament in December, because everyone knows it will be the last chance.
''It's the first time they have tried it so it will be something new, as well.
''They have been under pressure from the International Olympic Committee to change their qualification process.''
Sweden was crowned world champion when it beat host Canada 8-6 at the world men's championships at Victoria.
Scotland beat Denmark 7-6 to take the bronze medal. These games finalised the Olympic qualification position.
The eight teams confirmed for Sochi have been decided on points gathered in the 2012 and 2013 world championships.
The seven nations who have qualified are: Canada (14 points in 2012 and 12 points in 2013) 26, Sweden (10 and 14 ) 24, Scotland (whose points are allocated to Great Britain for Olympic purposes) (12 and 10) 22, Norway (9 and 8) 17, Denmark (6 and 9) 15, China (7 and 7) 14, and Switzerland. Russia, as host, has automatic entry.
Two nations will qualify from the qualifying event in both men's and women's disciplines, to complete the Olympic fields of 10 teams. For the women's curling competition Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland (points allocated to Great Britain), Canada, US, Denmark, Korea and Russia (as host) have all qualified directly for Sochi.
Germany, Japan, China, Italy, Latvia, Czech Republic and Norway are the nations eligible to compete in the women's qualification event in Fuessen.
The New Zealand mixed doubles team of Natalie Thurlow (Alexandra) and Hans Frauenlob (Auckland) have won seven of their eightsection games to reach the quarterfinals at the world championships in Canada.
They finished on the same 7 win, 1 loss record as Austria, but had earlier beaten the Austrians, so secured the top ranking. They will play the Czech Republic, Russia or Netherlands in a quarterfinal this morning.
Frauenlob also skips the senior men's side, playing with Dan Mustapic, Lorne DePape, Allan Langille and Pat Cooney. They were level at the top of the table with Switzerland before beating it 7-3 in the penultimate pool round, and in doing so guaranteed themselves the top spot, before their last pool match against Japan.
