John McGlashan seals spot in Rankin Cup with win

Oliver Battrick and Adam McNab banged in two goals apiece to power John McGlashan to a 4-0 hockey win over Saint Kentigern College in Wellington yesterday.

The victory meant Johnnies sealed top spot in pool G and qualified for the top-tier Rankin Cup.

They have won all three games and will play the runner-up in pool B, St Bede’s College, at noon today.

Battrick’s brace of goals lifted his tournament tally to six, while McNab has a total of four goals so far.

Battrick opened the scoring in the first minute of the game and added his second midway through the fourth quarter.

Otago Boys’ were edged 3-2 by Tauranga Boys’ in the morning.

Aiden Bax scored for Tauranga from a penalty corner in the second minute of the game and added another towards the end of the first quarter to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Xavier Peyroux responded for Otago Boys’ just before halftime. But Luke Spargo effectively clinched the win with his goal late in the third quarter.

Jacob Robinson cut the deficit with a goal in the last minute of the game.

At the South Island secondary schools netball tournament in Invercargill, Otago Girls’ beat Marlborough Girls’ 44-31 and Cromwell College 47-17 to keep their unbeaten record intact.

Southland Girls’ had a tougher day. They battled to a 37-37 draw with Villa Maria in the morning and lost 43-24 to another Christchurch school, St Margaret’s, in the afternoon.

St Hilda’s Collegiate dispatched Rangi Ruru 35-21 in the morning, and Columba rolled St Kevin’s 56-20 in their early game.
