Multisport: Paradise event on the up

A triathlon and duathlon that took competitors through pristine parts of Paradise where the Narnia and The Lord of the Rings films were made was held for the third time on Sunday.

Now in its third year, the Paradise off-road triathlon and duathlon is the third race in the southern tri-series.

Richie Lambert, of Queenstown, won the men's open triathlon in 1hr 12min 24sec and Sarah Cole was first in the women's open triathlon in 1hr 16min 24sec.

James Greenslade-Yates, of Wanaka, won the men's open duathlon in 56min 19sec and Georgina Murray, of Queenstown, won the women's open duathlon in 1hr 09min 56sec.

Interest in the event has been increasing each year since its inception in 2008.

Iconic Adventures race director Tracey Neil said while competitor numbers had previously "been on the small side", there had been a lot more interest this year.

The turnout of 90 competitors was triple last year's.

The course is a 500m swim on Diamond Lake, an 18km mountain bike ride along old 4WD farm tracks and a 6km trail run along Paradise bush trails.

A duathlon (bike and run) or kayak tri (3km kayak, bike and run) option is also available.

It is the only triathlon event on the Glenorchy sporting calendar.

Bruce McLean, of Wanaka, said he recommended the race to everyone he talked to.

"Paradise is such an amazingly beautiful spot and this is a great course with such an amazing feel."
