Former Olympic hockey player James Nation will be the new chief executive of Sport Otago.

Nation replaces the long-serving John Brimble, who announced his retirement on October 3 and will finish in the role on the last day of this year.

Nation played 103 games for the Black Sticks from 2003 to 2010.

He spent eight years working in the technology sector and more recently with accounting firm PKF Dunedin, and has served as a trustee of Sport Otago.

“I am honoured and excited to join Sport Otago as chief executive," Nation said in a statement.

"John Brimble is a tough act to follow; he leaves the organisation in great shape and ready to take on the future of the sport and recreation sector in Otago.

"I look forward to working with the amazing staff throughout the region, who put in the mahi to encourage every whanau to be active every day."

Nation will officially start as chief executive on January 25.

His appointment has been welcomed by Sport Otago chairman Jeff Broughton.

“James brings his experience as both a professional athlete and organisational leader to Sport Otago," Broughton said.

“I’ve worked with him as a trustee and know that he will lead the team to achieve great success in years to come."

Broughton also acknowledged the leadership of outgoing chief executive Brimble.

“John has led Sport Otago for the last 15 years during a time of much change in the sector.

"From extending the concept of sport to include recreation and play to managing through tough Covid times, John has been an unflappable leader and an inspiration to many.

"We say goodbye with much gratitude for his contribution, and wish him well for his next chapter."
