If hurtling down the side of a mountain with virtually no brakes appeals, then you are Alice Robinson’s kind of person.

The 21-year-old Queenstown alpine ski racer is made of gutsy stuff.

She will be drawing on some of that courage again this weekend.

Robinson is competing at the Winter Games in the FIS Australia New Zealand Cup giant slalom races set to be held on August 28 -29 at Coronet Peak.

The defending champion will have the home snow advantage and a sound knowledge of a track she said was "pretty tough".

Robinson won the New Zealand national giant slalom title on the weekend. It was her third national title in the event and it was the same track on which she will be competing at the Winter Games.

"I just started back training, so it is kind of offseason at the moment but it [my form] has been good," she said.

"I have not done the nationals in a few years, so I thought I’d do it and it was fun."

It was also a solid dress rehearsal.

"It is a pretty tough track. It is quite challenging and has a bit of everything."

Despite the snowfall being light this season, Robinson said there was good coverage on the track but "I wouldn’t say it is the best track for me, but I’ll see what I can do on it".

Sliding down a steep slope at high speed with all the stopping power only hope can muster can "definitely be scary at times".

"But I’ve always been into adrenaline-type things and I’ve never been that scared.

"I guess when you do something a lot and you train for it, it becomes less scary and more natural.

"It is a pretty cool feeling when you are in control but kind of not in control and going really fast."

She does miss the sun, though. Robinson goes from winter to winter chasing glory on the world circuit.

Last season she secured three seventh-place finishes at world cup events. Two of those were in the giant slalom.

She is a world-class performer and should be among the leading contenders in her event.

Most of her racing is done overseas, so being able to compete at home in front of family and friends was "really special".

The Winter Games is scheduled to start on August 27.
