Son following father

Another of Duncan Laing's sons, Graeme Laing, has followed in his father's footsteps.

Graeme will coach New Zealand's best medal prospect, Lauren Boyle, and Matthew Stanley at next month's Rio Olympics.

Laing's coaching helped the swimmers get selected for the Games and he coached both of them at the world championships in Russia last year, in which Boyle gained two silver medals.

He did not attend an Olympic Games but is a former national age-group champion in freestyle and butterfly and won the New Zealand national championships in freestyle.

Laing was also a New Zealand surf life-saving representative from 1980 to 1982 and was a New Zealand water polo representative in 1982.

Now based in Matamata, Laing coached and taught swimming in Dunedin for 20 years with Duncan.

He also played 15 games as a prop for the Otago rugby team from 1990 to 1994 and played for many seasons for the Dunedin club.
