The new BMX track at Forrester Park has been given the thumbs-up.

The track, which has been extensively upgraded, including the installation of new starting gates and linings and parts of the track being asphalted, got its first decent work-out, when the Dunedin Open was held on Sunday.

The major renovation took upwards of a year and cost between $250,000 and $350,000.

There is still a bit of work to be done including more asphalting on the corners and tidying up with plantings and grass. There are also extra viewing platforms and car parking to sort out but the track itself is in good order.

The renovations have all come about through voluntary work and resources, fundraising and from funding applications.

The weekend was a busy one as the Southland Open was held in Invercargill on Saturday and there was racing on Sunday.

Competing for the Dunedin club in Invercargill, Deegan McCormick raced well all day, not dropping a race and finishing with firsts in all five races.

Jacob Wadsworth raced well to win the 12 boys, while his sister, Bella, finished third in her cruiser class. Brothers Nic and Justin Butler also gained third places in their respective classes.

For the Alexandra BMX Club, Lily Huband and Tamai Riwhi battled it out all day in the 8 to 12 girls. It came down to one point being the difference, first-season racer Huband claiming it over the younger Riwhi.

Ben James, of Alexandra, won all his races bar one while brother Lachie was second in the cruiser class and had to settle for third in the 13 boys by one point against clubmate Keagan Hoskins.

At Forrester Park, Justin Butler finished first in the boys 8-9, McCormick came second and Rhys Heger was third.

Tamryn Hurring-Webster mixed it with the males and walked away with a second in the cruiser and a third in the 20 inch.

Pete Andrews jun raced strongly to secure the 30-plus mixed.

Ben James, of Alexandra, won all his races in the 11 boys class as did Holly Oldham in the 13-14 girls class. Duncan Sutherland was another Alexandra racer to find form and win his class. A crash in race two stopped him from a clean winning streak.
