Wingatui apprentice Corey Campbell will continue to lay the foundations for his national apprentice's premiership bid at Wingatui today.

He got his season under way in style on the final day of the Grand National Meeting at Riccarton earlier this month with two winning rides.

How many more wins the 18-year-old is able to rack up before Christmas and New Year racing period could decide his apprentice's premiership fate.

Campbell finished third in last year's competition, behind Ryan Elliot and Kavish Chowdhoory.

The jockey said he will take a quiet approach to early stages of this year's premiership race.

"It is a bit early in the season to worry about the premiership," Campbell said.

"I will try to ride as many winners as I can and see where I am at Christmas and reassess from there."

Campbell's tally of 42 winners last term could have been bigger if two significant injuries had not kept him away from racing for a good chunks of the season.

"Hopefully I can go injury free this season and we will see how we go."

Campbell has a strong book of six rides at today's meeting.

Two of them are for home track trainer Steve Tyler, who starts Black Label in race 2.

The 7yr-old drops significantly in class in today's 1200m rating 72 event.

She comes in to the race after running third behind Suggestive Loox and Turncoat in premier company on the final day of the Grand National Carnival.

"It is a bit off a different class from National week at Riccarton to this meeting.

"If she runs up to what she did last start, she should be pretty hard to beat."

Campbell's 2kg claim brings Black Label's 59kg top weight down to 57kg.

The Tyler-trained Our Teddy Boy went a strong race for second over 1400m on the first day of the Grand National Carnival, before failing over 1600m on its final day.

He also drops in class when lining up in race 1, a rating 82 event over 1400m.

"He likes Wingatui, and dropping back to 1400m should suit him.

"It just depends which version of the horse shows up, to be fair - he has to have things go his way.

"The other day at Riccarton it looked like he got trapped out wide, and that is probably not his go."

Campbell's claim has Our Teddy Boy carrying 52kg today.

Tyler also starts Dreaming Easy in race 1.

Campbell will combine with Leda Beck-trained maiden Sounds Promising in race 5.

The 5yr-old impressed his jockey with his gritty effort for second over 1600m in his last start at Timaru.

"I rode him in his first start at Gore over 1200m and he actually ran really well for ninth.

"Over 1600m with the wet track at Wingatui, it should suit him perfectly."

Campbell also rides Rorgus in race 3, Fine Bouquet in race 4 and Reliable Glow in race 7.
