The new Tim Butt and Jonny Cox training partnership notched its first winner, at Forbury Park last night.

The  duo produced Frankie D, an impressive winner of race 3.

Unfortunately, the horse is not blessed with the kind of intellect and smarts for racing his trainers do, but he does have his fair share of ability and is getting smarter with more racing.

"He has always had a motor but he’s been a bit dumb," Cox said.

"He is learning, but he is still not bombproof. I was just a passenger out of the gate tonight.

"But once he finds the front he does settle pretty well."

Frankie D was the 10th starter the partnership has produced  since  Butt and Cox joined forces earlier this month.

Though they have started with a humble Forbury Park maiden win, there is hope for  many more to come.

"It is exciting. Tim has got some good owners and very nice horses that he has left us [Cox and the West Melton staff]  in charge with."

Butt is in Menangle, overseeing the Australian arm of the  operation.

Cox will pair with Otago star Eamon Maguire in Sunday’s Ashburton Cup.

His regular driver, Dexter Dunn, is committed to driving race rival Raukapuka Ruler.

"It looks like a nice race for him, but any one of them could win it," Westwood Beach trainer Graeme Anderson said.

"He had a hard run last time but has worked pretty well since.’’Anderson and Dunn combined to win race 8 with Highview Illusion last night.

The horse was likely to be aimed at the amateur drivers’ race at the Omakau meeting in the new year,  Anderson said.

Dunn was also in winning form last night with the Kirstin Barclay-trained Jetenara.

The horse’s form did not suggest he was worthy of starting a $2.10 favourite for race 2, but his winning performance was. It followed 13 unplaced starts. But the stars aligned for Jetenara when he landed a good draw over his favoured 2200m trip, on his favoured  track. Dunn  shot  Jetenara to the front early and their rivals were not given even a slight look in.

The driver scored his second win from three drives  behind the pacer who cruised to the line a one and a quarter-lengths in front of runner-up Glenisthebettor.

Barclay will be trying to partially replicate last night’s winning formula with Jetenara during the summer racing circuit.

The horse would be aimed at sprint races at Roxburgh and Cromwell. It was another successful night out for the country’s leading reinsman, Blair Orange. Orange saluted with Sage Trouble in race 1, Texas Ruler in race 4 and Imran Khan in race 5.
