Racing: Apprentice gains ride

Trainers Peter and Dawn Williams have opted for an apprentice allowance on Sir Frankie at Riccarton today.

Sir Frankie will be ridden by Centaine Spittles who can claim 2kg.

Sir Frankie is the only rival for four Michael Pitman-trained horses in the open 1200m.

Sir Frankie has not raced since he won a rating 75 1200m on the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting on November 8 with Noel Harris the rider.

His rivals include the last-start winners, Coup Bloomsbury and Scarlet Fever.

Jamie Bullard returns to race riding today after a break of seven months. He underwent surgery to a knee.

His rides are Grand Rapids, Saint Zede and Mohaka.

Grand Rapids was runner-up in his two starts at the NZ Cup meeting.

Saint Zede was a last-start second at Cromwell on November 30.

Mohaka is also resuming from a seven-month break.

Bullard rode the Williams-trained gelding in two of his three wins at Riccarton last season.

•Melbourne: Butwaittheresmore will be on trial at Caulfield today for the Perth Cup.

The Lord Of Warriors 4yr-old has been freshened by Flemington trainer Mike Moroney after finished fast for third to Banana Man and Imvula in the Bendigo Cup (2400m) on November 12.

"He was very unlucky in the Bendigo Cup," Anthony Feroce, the stable manager said.

"The plan is for him to race today and then over 2500m at Flemington on December 20 and then we'll make a decision on whether he goes to Perth or stays here for the Bagot."

The group two $A400,000 Perth Cup (2400m) is at Ascot on January 1 while the listed $A150,000 Bagot Handicap (2800m) is at Flemington the same day.

Butwaittheresmore has won two of his 15 starts.

Moroney tried him against the best 3yr-olds in New Zealand and Australia last season.

The gelding ran sixth in the NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie in March.
