Racing: Extra distance test for Monty Python tomorrow

The 3200m trot at the Tuapeka Harness Racing Club's annual meeting at Forbury Park offers a different challenge for trotters.

And it is the extreme distance which might test the Phil Williamson-trained Monty Python when he takes his spot on the 30m mark tomorrow.

After starting his season with a win, Monty Python has been chasing home smart trotters such as Sheemon, Monbet and Quite A Moment who are all potentially Dominion-bound.

Tomorrow's c2-c6 race is a drop in class, but a rise in distance.

When asked about the length of the race, Williamson said the 6yr-old's busy racing schedule this season should help.

''[The distance] is a wee bit of a query but because he's had a bit of racing under him, and hard racing at Addington, I think that will stand to him and he'll be tough to beat,'' he said.

Multiple group 1 winner Vulcan starts off the 40m mark alongside Och Aye The Noo. Monty Python is joined on the 30m mark by Valmagne and Feather Boyz, with Experiment starting off the unruly.

''I think he's a really good chance in his race with Valmagne. I think those two stand out in the field,'' Williamson said.

''I think the class will come out at the end and those back horses will be dominant.''

The richly bred Madam Spur is on debut in the c0-c1 2200m trot and Williamson sees no reason why she can't be prominent at the finish.

The full sister to Miss Pegasus and the daughter of Rowe Cup winner Merinai qualified at Forbury Park in April, but has been given time to develop.

''She's a wee bit of a frail filly compared to her sister Miss Pegasus, who was a lot stronger, but she's still a reasonable little horse,'' Williamson said.

''She's definitely a good maiden. I'm sure she'll give it a bit of a shake, actually.''

The 4yr-old has shown enough at trials for Williamson to have some confidence she will trot away from the tapes.

''Normally she's pretty reliable and a well-mannered wee mare. She's got a little turn of speed and I think she'll be pretty hard to beat.''

Blazing Under Fire steps up to the c1 grade over 2200m, although the distance might not suit - particular as he starts off the unruly mark.

''It's just to get him hopefully on the journey,'' Williamson explained.

''It is a wee bit of a handicap over the 2200m, but I think he will go a nice race.''

''He'd be better suited to the 2700m than the 2200m but he just needs some racing so he's there and hopefully he will be competitive.''

Williamson takes three runners to Ashburton on Monday, with Springbank Sam facing a stiff test in the group 3 trotters' flying mile, even from barrier 4.

''We're happy enough with how he's come up but at that top, top level, he'd need a really nice run.

''If he got that nice run and if he finished in the top six, I'd be happy with that.''

Williamson expects Pyramid Monarch to be ''pretty competitive'' in race 5, but Pyramid Magic (race 1) has to ''step up a little bit''.
