Racing: Faites Vos Jeux looking strong

South Canterbury jockey Ross Doherty loves riding races on the flat, but he has one handy advantage for his two jumping rides at Riccarton tomorrow.

Doherty will team up with Faites Vos Jeux in the opening race, a 0-1 win hurdle, before tackling the big fences with Kidunot in the $70,000 Grand National Steeplechase later in the day.

And he's pleased he will have plenty of energy for the two races over a combined distance of 8.7km.

''I've only got jumping races [to ride] up there, so there'll be no wasting,'' Doherty said.

''I'll be feeling fit and feeling a bit stronger, so I'll be able to have a big feed.''

Faites Vos Jeux's form over the hurdles is hard to fault, finishing out of the top three only once in five starts, but the track, rated as a heavy10 surface yesterday, holds some concerns for the Yamanin Vital mare.

''The track conditions I'm a little bit apprehensive about - hopefully, it will either dry out so she can keep her feet out of it, or the other case, we get a bit of rain, enough to make it loose and get through.''

The 7yr-old will carry an extra 3.5kg after she was rehandicapped following her powerful win at Oamaru, and Doherty said she had done nothing wrong in her track work since the Oamaru success on July 29.

''We've had a couple of wet-track gallops and she's been all right - she's feeling awesome. She's eating the house down and coming through every race rock solid, so she's fit and well.''

Faites Vos Jeux has shown a tendency to finish strongly, so don't expect to see her up on the pace early.

''I wouldn't mind being out the back like last time,'' he said.

''If there's a couple of stragglers, I'll leave them be, but just behind the main bunch. I like to come from behind and pass a few.''

The sparing use of the steeplechase section of the racecourse - with just three races on it during the first two days of the carnival - could help Kidunot in his quest to win the Grand National Steeplechase, after his win at Oamaru on July 29 on a dead track.

''The track conditions down there were more suited to him but the steeplechase course up here, I rode around on it yesterday and it's actually really nice. It's a bit firmer than the course proper until you come on after ''Jumbo'' [a fence] and hit the muck.''

Doherty has plenty of respect for the Mark Oulaghan-trained Brushman and admired Karlos winning the Koral Steeplechase last Saturday, but hopes the space between runs will have suited Kidunot.

''It depends how much the races have taken out of them, as we'll come into it pretty fresh.''

Doherty admits there's no race when asked to select his best chance of the two.

''I'm always going to angle towards Faites Vos Jeux - she's my favourite and she has been for the last 15 months since I've been down here [working for David Hutton].

''Even the missus gets put second-best to her, much to her disappointment.''
