Papilio bridged a 22-year gap for owners Philip and Peter Vela when she won the South Island Breeders' Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday.
The prominent Waikato breeders raced Najaba, who won the race in 1990 when trained by Laurie Laxon and ridden by Grant Davison.
Papilio is trained by Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie.
The 4yr-old daughter of Redoute's Choice and Lafleur was ridden by Darryl Bradley, who won the Breeders' Stakes on Zaza for trainer Michael Pitman in 2001.
Papilio is co-owned by Jim Gibbs, the retired Matamata trainer. He prepared Lafleur to win the Royal Stakes and Sir Tristram Classic in the 2002-03 season when the daughter of Zabeel was raced by the Vela brothers.
Bradley was suspended from next Sunday until midnight the following Thursday for shifting out at the 400m causing a check to Irish Jewel.
Papilio and stablemate Barbadine have remained at Riccarton. Papilio is in the group three $70,000 Easter Cup (1600m) on April 14.
Ramsay was very disappointed in the showing of Barbadine, the beaten favourite in the Hororata Cup on Saturday,"We had her scoped and could find nothing wrong. I am still viewing the Riverton Cup (April 7) with her," Ramsay said.
Stablemate Pure Elegance, a brilliant winner of the race for 2yr-olds at Waipukurau on Friday, will be turned out.
She is a filly by Redoute's Choice from Our Echezeaux bred on the same cross as Papilio. Our Echezeaux is a sister to Grand Echezeaux, winner of the Australasian Oaks and dam of Darci Brahma.
