Racing: Leighton Hest not far off return

Leighton Hest, away from racing since November 2010, and now trained by Andrew Faulks, has a trial at Oamaru today.

Leighton Hest joined the Faulks stable at Waikouaiti in January for the benefit of straight-line training on the beach. The 7yr-old underwent surgery on a hind tendon after he finished seventh in the 2010 Dominion Handicap. The leg was scanned and a minute hole detected in the tendon. The tendon was split and he had shock wave therapy.

Safely through his trial, Faulks is viewing a return to to racing for Leighton Hest at Winton on May 27.

Leighton Hest won nine races, including the the Harness Jewels at Ashburton as a 4yr-old and the Four-Year-Old Trotters' Championship, from 30 starts when trained by Phil Williamson.

Veeceewah is another newcomer to the Faulks stable. She won three races when trained by Greg and Nina Hope.

Motu Prince Of Peru has joined the Templeton stable of Anthony Butt after a change of ownership.

The Julius Caesar-Peruvian Princess 3yr-old has won two of his three starts and finished fourth in the other. Motu Prince Of Peru won at Gore and Winton for Chatton owner-trainer Allan McVicar.

Ideal Scott will bypasshis engagement at Cambridge tomorrow night and race atAlexandra Park on Friday week.

"I took him to the workouts today and he went good so I will stay with my original intention of going to Auckland next week," Brian Hughes, the co-trainer of Ideal Scott, said yesterday.

Ideal Scott won his workout at Alexandra Park by two lengths from Pocket The Dream, with half a length to Mustang Mach, last-start winner of the Messenger. Ideal Scott ran the 2200m in 2.49.6, the last 800m in 58.9.

Ideal Scott has won seven of his 14 starts this season and $436,000.

His wins include the Northern Derby, New Zealand Yearling Sales Pace and heats of the Victoria and New South Wales Derbies.

Bettor Cover Lover will face a depleted field at Cambridge where she is off 30m over 2200m in a $6000 race. There have been five scratchings from an original field of 16.

Bettor Cover Lover, who has not raced since finishing second to Terror To Love in the Taylor Mile, is booked for Melbourne tomorrow week and the $100,000 Queen Of The Pacific at Melton two nights later.

She will be back on the track where she won a heat of the Victoria Oaks in April last year.

She won the Oaks final at Ballarat a week later.

She is back in New Zealand for the Harness Jewels on June 2.

Fly The Flag, who has been entered for the Oamaru meeting on Sunday, won a trial at Motukarara yesterday.

Fly The Flag has not raced since she won the Akaroa Cup at Motukarara on March 18.

Master Bomber, who was sidelined with a bowed tendon, won the main trial for trotters yesterday.

The winner of 10 races, Master Bomber has not raced since April last year.

"He was ready to resume racing in December when he suffered the low bow of a tendon. He hasn't been turned out for very long," Gerard O'Reilly, his trainer, said.

Master Bomber won fresh up for O'Reilly at Addington in September, 2010. He took over the training of the gelding from owner Hubert Christy.

"He [Master Bomber] will race over the winter," O'Reilly said.
