Roxburgh Trotting Club president Bill Bain has more reason than most to love his home track.  Bain and his wife, Pauline are part-owners of Onedin Onyx along with trainers Geoff and Jude Knight and the 3yr-old took after his mother by winning at Roxburgh.

The son of Changeover is out of Onedin Dancer, who won eight years previously, on January 5, 2007.

Bain said the win was timely, not only because it came at Roxburgh's annual meeting, but because a half-brother is entered in the yearling sales this year.

‘‘We've got one by Sportswriter going to the sales this year,'' Bain said.

‘‘I think she's a really good broodmare. She only had about 15 or 16 races and won two - she just wasn't sound but she could always run.''

A decision to send Onedin Dancer to an untested sire four years ago paid off, as the progeny of Changeover have flourished in the last two years.

Visit to track worthwhile

Strathfield Sun is already part of an established family, being out of the open-class mare Whosinthenest.

But trainer Neil Munro is not expecting Strathfield Sun to repeat the feats of relatives like Sonofthedon (7 wins from 11 starts).

''To be fair, he's not up with them and but he goes good,'' Munro said.

While he lacks the outright speed of his mother, his manners have made him a factor in the maiden grade, and a look at the track at the Roxburgh trials on December 21 also worked.

‘‘We came here early and gave him a run around this track two weeks ago and he trialled really good here,'' Munro said.

‘‘We thought we'd press on and come here and he did the job.''

Munro, from Christchurch, is a regular on the Central Otago circuit, combining a holiday with a chance to campaign horses.

‘‘I normally bring a couple down because me and the kids come away on holiday and camp at Cromwell.''

Success for Saunders

The good start to the training career of former Highlanders outside back Matt Saunders continued when Ohoka Royal produced a booming run to win his maiden contest.

Saunders has now trained two winners from 13 starters, with his first win coming through Just Ned at Winton last month.

‘‘It's good when it's going good, but I know there are going to be some tougher days,'' Saunders said.

Ohoka Royal was bought out of Kyle Cameron's stable after running seventh at Addington on November 28.
