Wakatipu High School took third place at the South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships last weekend, beating rowing powerhouses Christ's College, Otago Boys' High School and Rangi Ruru.

The squad from the Queenstown secondary school brought home three gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze medal from the tournament in Twizel.

The school will raise funds for the team to compete in the national Maadi Cup regatta, at Twizel from March 26 to April 1, boys squad coach Annabel Ritchie said.

"Last year 70 local businesses helped sponsor the kids to the New Zealand Championships and they returned with Wakatipu High School's first-ever New Zealand Championship medals, so we are hopeful the local community will be just as generous this year, to help the kids compete."
