Lions peaking at just the right time

The British and Irish Lions are right where they want to be and believe strength throughout the squad will pay dividends tonight.

The visiting side had a light training run yesterday and then rested for what is is shaping to be an intense — some would say epic — encounter tonight.

Lions assistant coach Rob Howley said the team was peaking at the right time and it was the chance to finish off the promise they had shown.

"We’ve created a lot of opportunities and the challenge  against the world champions is to finish off. There won’t be that many," Howley said.

"We have trained well this week and from over the past two games ... the leadership had been brilliant. A few of us have been waiting for this event since the last game 12 years ago.

"It is something we are looking to embrace and go out and play some good rugby.

"Defence wins games. We all know that. But in the past two games we have not conceded a point in the second half."

Howley said the side was well aware of what the All Blacks would bring to the game.

"They kick a lot, one of the most for international teams. They kick somewhere between 28 to 32 times in a game."

He had full confidence in his side’s back three.

The victories in the past two games, including  Tuesday’s win over the Chiefs, had given a big boost to the squad.

"It has given us added momentum. To see the leaders who were in the shadows and were not involved on Tuesday getting involved, we were immensely pleased."

Howley said while it was just a game of rugby tonight,  the players were prepared for what they would receive from the All Blacks.

"There is no doubt this is going to have to be the best performance of the tour. They have got world-class players. Their nine and 10 are world-class. But in Conor [Murray] and Owen [Farrell] we believe we have got the two best from the northern hemisphere."

The Lions will undoubtedly look to attack through the high ball but there were other facets to their game they were keen to show.

The backs coach said captain Peter O’Mahony had tremendous respect from the entire group.

The team had leadership throughout the side which would help O’Mahony out during the 80 minutes.

Fullback reserve Leigh Halfpenny came through training well yesterday and will take his place on the bench tonight.
