Shannon Frizell has moved from relative obscurity to prominence, and all it took was three tries in prime time on a Friday night.

The rugged loose forward started the season buried deep in the Highlanders roster, but on Saturday will join an elite club when he makes his debut for the All Blacks.

The 24-year-old is one of two new caps named in the starting XV for the third test against France.

Crusaders centre Jack Goodhue is the other. He replaces Anton Lienert-Brown and will partner Sonny Bill Williams in the midfield.

There are two new test players waiting on the bench in Crusaders first five-eighth Richie Mo'unga and Highlanders lock Jackson Hemopo as well.

Ben Smith shifts back to fullback where he is most effective, and fellow Highlander Waisake Naholo will start on the right wing, with Jordie Barrett relegated to the bench - no word on whether he will be doing a burger run at halftime.

Luke Whitelock retains his spot at No 8, while Highlanders team-mate Liam Coltman will be hoping to be pressed into action from the bench.

Ardie Savea gets a start at openside, with Matt Todd coming on to the bench and Sam Cane dropping out of the 23.

Hemopo's inclusion ahead of Highlanders locking partner Tom Franklin is down to his ability to cover both lock and loose forward.

He caught the selectors' eye with a strong performance for the Highlanders during their 23-22 win against British and Irish Lions last year.

But arguably the most compelling storyline is the rise of Frizell.

The blindside burst into the national consciousness with a hat trick of tries during the Highlanders 34-16 win against the Blues at Eden Park in April.

He is the brother of Kangaroos and New South Wales forward Tyson Frizell, with whom he shares a devastating ability to bump off tackles.

While the Tongan-born player has an impressive physical pedigree, he is more or less a novice at the top level, having made just a handful of starting appearances for the Highlanders.

Frizell and Hemopo get their opportunity after loose forward Vaea Fifita suffered a head knock and was withdrawn from the squad earlier in the week, while Highlanders flanker Liam Squire has an AC-joint problem and will also sit out the game.

Star first five-eighth Beauden Barrett was ruled out so he can recover from concussion symptoms he has been experiencing following a mid-air collision with French fullback Benjamin Fall last weekend.

Coach Steve Hansen has resisted the temptation to start with Mo'unga, who is arguably a more accomplished first five-eighth, and has instead backed Damian McKenzie to improve on his performance in the second test. It will be his first start in the No 10 jersey.

"One of the aims of the ... series was to continue to build depth across our squad and give players opportunities," Hansen said.

"Now that we have secured the Dave Gallaher trophy and won the series, we think this is the right time to do that."
