Dunedin loose forward Mark Atkins has been selected for a New Zealand sevens training camp in Mt Maunganui this week.

Atkins is one of 20 players selected by national coach Gordon Tietjens for the camp, with a view to selection for forthcoming sevens tournaments.

Atkins is the son of former Canterbury No 8 Dale Atkins and missed part of the club season while he played in a sevens tournament in Sri Lanka.

He was not a member of the Otago team which was a finalist at this year's national sevens tournament.

Also picked in the 20-man squad is former Otago winger Joe Hill.

After Hill missed selection for this year's Otago ITM Cup squad, he returned to Wellington.

A squad will be picked in a few weeks for the first tournaments on the sevens circuit on the Gold Coast on October 13-14 and in Argentina on October 20-21.
