Jordie Barrett, of the Hurricanes, makes a break during his side’s Super Rugby quarterfinal against the Brumbies at Hnry Stadium in a wet and windy Wellington last night.

Barrett was not the only one running away last night as the Hurricanes made no contest of the match, outscoring their Australian opponents nine tries to two to deliver a 66-12 hiding, their running game apparently unhindered by the conditions.

The Brumbies conceded the highest points total in any Super Rugby finals match, with Cam Roigard and Warner Dearns both picking up a brace for Wellington and Ngane Punivai coming off the bench with enough time to register a hat-trick with tries in the 62nd, 71st and 78th minutes.

Billy Proctor and Caleb Delany also dotted down for the Hurricanes.

First five Ruben Love also ensured there would be no let-up by knocking over a perfect 10 out of 10 from the kicking tee.

The Brumbies managed a converted try to Corey Toole late in the first half to briefly raise hopes they could get something going, but the Hurricanes replied just four minutes later and took a 38-7 lead into halftime.

From there the one-way traffic continued, sending the Hurricanes soaring into the semis with their status as competition favourites well and truly re-emphasised. — Allied Media
