Taieri poses students a puzzle

University has a tough problem to solve tomorrow — how do you crack Taieri’s defence?

If the students can find an answer to that then they might just be in business.

Taieri has conceded just 49 points in six games, though, so no-one else has been able to find a solution.

Adding to the complexity of the task, University could be without four of its best players.

Aaron Withy, Jeremiah Asi, Ale Aho and Jermaine Pepe have all been named in the New Zealand Universities squad to tour Japan.

It is only a short tour and the foursome will definitely be out for the round eight match against Kaikorai on May 27.

But, speaking earlier in the week, coach Russell Lundy was not sure whether they would be available for tomorrow’s game. It all depended on flight times.

Regardless, University desperately needs a win.

It has slipped outside the top six and nurses a record of two wins from six games.

"We would definitely prefer to be a little further up the ladder than we are, there is no doubt about that," Lundy said.

"But the games have been close. We’ve had two or three games that we’ve lost that we had every opportunity to win.

"We’ve got no-one else to blame for the position we are in. We’ve just got to do a better job of closing games out."

University will start as a firm underdog against the Eels, but Lundy hopes that will allow his side to play with more freedom.

"We’ll have to try something different from what we’ve been doing week after week and give it our best shot," he said.

"They have a real tight defensive line and we’ll do our best to break that down. But one-off runners does not seem to be the answer, so we’ll need to try something else."

University has been hit by injuries up front and has been fielding a young front row.

Eighteen-year-old Charles Engelbrecht has had to muck in for some shifts and "two or three of our other front-rowers are under 20".

"It is just a young group. We’ve struggled there, there is no doubt about that."

While University has got off to a slow start, the top six is still well within reach, but a couple of wins would certainly help.

"It has been a real challenge around injuries and illness ... but if we can get a bit of consistency around selection and get some guys back on deck, we’ll give it a crack over the second part of the season."

Alhambra-Union is hosting Kaikorai at the North Ground, the Harbour-Green Island clash at Watson Park shapes as the most competitive game of the round, and Zingari-Richmond will be looking for a breakthrough win against defending champion Southern at Montecillo.
