Change of venue has challenges

Preparations for the premier semifinals are still under way but Harbour will play Dunedin in the early game at 1pm and Southern will play Kaikorai at 2.30pm.

The semifinals were initially scheduled for the University Oval but had to be shifted because of the poor condition of the wicket block.

With Forsyth Barr Stadium unavailable, the match committee opted to play the semifinals at Hancock Park.

Otago Rugby Football Union community rugby manager Richard Perkins said a meeting was planned for today, at which the ''finishing touches'' would be put in place.

But the new location will present a few challenges, particularly for spectators. There will not be any seating, which means supporters will have to jostle for positions on the sidelines or watch from John Wilson Ocean Dr.

''Unfortunately, with it being at Hancock Park, there won't be any seating,'' Perkins said.

''The ground will just be roped off and be managed accordingly.''

It could be a scramble for prime viewing positions and Perkins has asked that people respect the boundary.

''We are hoping that playing the two games at different times will ensure people can see the games.''

The early semifinal will be played on the No2 ground and the second on the No1 ground.

The reserves bench and a broadcasting platform will be set up in the space between the No1 and No2 grounds, leaving even less space for spectators.

Perkins said the earlier-than-usual start time for the second semifinal would give supporters extra time to get back to their clubs and allow for continuity with ''one game after another''.

Perkins said the match committee would meet at the end of the season to review the competition and one of the items on the agenda would be looking at whether a long-term solution was needed to avoid facing the same issue in 12 months' time.

The ORFU did not apply to play the semifinals at Forsyth Barr Stadium earlier in the year but made some inquiries once it became clear the games could not be played at the University Oval.

''We didn't apply [earlier] because of the advice we were given around the stadium's commitments,'' Perkins said.

''There was already a fairly full schedule.''
