Southern has made a winning start to its campaign with an unconvincing 25-17 win against Harbour at Watson Park this afternoon.
Harbour actually had the better of the match but ill discipline cost the home side with the Magpies converting six penalty opportunities and grabbing a fortunate try midway through the second period.
In the other games, Dunedin prevailed 32-18 against Green Island at Kettle Park, Kaikorai beat Zingari-Richmond 23-9 at Montecillo and University beat Taieri 32-23 at Peter Johnstone Park.
