Taieri made it a hat trick of titles at the Spartans 10s event at Miller Park on Saturday.

The Eels have won the titles in the past couple of years and took out their third title in a row with a 12-0 win over an Otago Boys’ High School side in the final.

The Taieri side weathered plenty of pressure from the opposition, made up of former pupils of Otago Boys’ High School. But the men from the plain did enough to stop the old school side even getting on the board.

There were 10 teams in the open grade, and competition was fierce as teams used the tournament for an extra piece of pre-season training.

In the over-35 years grade, the Spartans team was dethroned, going down 7-5 in a titanic battle with Harry’s Hitters.

The Spartans had won the grade for the past few years but could not quite match the enthusiasm and hard work of the Hitters.

It was the inaugural tournament for the women’s grade, and the Islanders reversed a round robin match to win the final 12-10 over the Kaiapoi team.

The Kaiapoi team had gone the whole day unbeaten, but lost in the final in a close match.

A fundraising dinner for the Suicide Prevention Trust took place in the Green Island Rugby Football Club rooms on Saturday night. Tournament organiser Shane Waldron said the dinner had gone well. The total amount raised was yet to be finalised.
