The Highlanders’ Super Rugby Trans-Tasman game against the Melbourne Rebels in Queenstown on Sunday hangs in the balance after the travel bubble between New Zealand and Victoria was paused last night.

Victoria Health confirmed Covid-19 infections yesterday afternoon, which bring the state’s total number of community cases to nine.

The 72-hour pause, which came into effect at 7.59pm yesterday, will be constantly under review.

The Rebels, who left New Zealand following their loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington at the weekend, were to have flown out of Melbourne on Friday morning.

Initially told of a later New Zealand deadline, they started scrambling to get out of the state last night, but could not find enough seats for all players and staff on a flight departing at 6pm.

Rebels chief executive Baden Stephenson remained hopeful the match would go ahead as planned. Both countries’ prime ministers are set to attend.

"We will now fly out on Saturday, which is a day later than scheduled, but we’re still confident we will be able to play," Stephenson said.

"If things worsen and the bubble isn’t reinstated then we will look to get some kind of travel exemption ... so we will see how the week plays out."
