Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has backed star winger Waisaki Naholo to return to his brilliant best in time for the World Cup.

Naholo has been struggling to find his sparkling touch this season and now faces six weeks on the sideline.

The 26-game All Black injured his knee at training on Monday and the setback could jeopardise his prospects of making the World Cup squad.

But Mauger believes the 27-year-old outside back has the right mindset to make a positive impact when he returns to the field.

''We back 'Wise' 100%. He is one of the most lethal finishers in the game and one of the best wingers in this competition,'' Mauger said.

''We're absolutely gutted for him. But he has handled it well and he's positive as normal.

''Wise always has a big smile on his face. He walked through the door this morning with that same smile.

''He can only control what is ahead of him now which is to get himself right.''

Naholo has scored 41 tries for the Highlanders since making his debut in 2015. But that potency has been largely absent this season and a forgettable game against the Blues had many wondering what has happened to the Fijian's confidence.

''It is hard for anyone in life when you are having a bit of a tough patch. One thing we've done is put the support around him.

''He is a quality man and a quality rugby player. It is just reminding him of that.

''When he plays his best footy, he plays with a smile on his face. We've tried to create opportunities to get him involved.

''For whatever reason that hasn't quite worked - through maybe trying a little bit too hard or the ball not coming his way.

''But I have every confidence he'll be back to his best when he gets back on the field.

''He is not far away. It will take one action and his game will click and he will be away.''
